Our support team
Kandis Fox
Client Navigator
Kandis is often the first voice you will hear. She specializes in navigating the initial steps, including verifying insurance and answering logistical questions, to ensure you are matched with the right clinician.
Understanding your clinician’s credentials
We believe you deserve to understand exactly who you are working with and what their credentials mean. Here is a straightforward breakdown of the clinical designations you may encounter at Awaken Wellness:
-
Our graduate interns are master's-level students completing their required clinical practicum or internship hours as part of an accredited mental health counseling, social work, or related graduate program. They are in the final stages of their academic training and are gaining supervised, hands-on clinical experience under the direct oversight of a fully licensed clinician.
At Awaken Wellness, interns do not work independently. Their role is carefully structured to support their development while protecting the quality of your care. Interns:
Observe clinical sessions conducted by licensed clinicians
Develop and apply clinical skills within a supervised framework
Participate in case conceptualization and team discussions around treatment goals and interventions
Are supervised by a licensed clinician who reviews their work and remains accountable for the care provided
Working with an intern means you are receiving care from an emerging clinician who is enthusiastic, current in their training, and closely guided by experienced supervision. Intern sessions are offered at a reduced rate, making quality mental health care more accessible.
-
A Limited Permit Mental Health Counselor has completed their master's degree in mental health counseling or a related field and has been granted a limited permit by New York State to practice under supervision while working toward full licensure. They have met the academic requirements for licensure and are in the process of accumulating the required post-graduate supervised clinical hours.
MHC-LPs at Awaken Wellness:
Hold a completed master's degree in mental health counseling or a closely related field
Are authorized to provide individual, group, couples, and family therapy under supervision
Receive ongoing clinical supervision from a fully licensed clinician
Bring current, graduate-level training and a high level of clinical investment to their work
Are working actively toward full licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor
Clinicians at this stage are often deeply motivated, highly trained, and bring a fresh clinical perspective grounded in the most current evidence-based practices. Sessions with an MHC-LP are offered at a mid-range rate that reflects their training and supervised status.
-
A Licensed Mental Health Counselor has met all requirements for independent clinical practice in New York State. This includes the completion of a master's degree, a minimum of 3,000 hours of post-graduate supervised clinical experience, and passing scores on the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).
LMHCs at Awaken Wellness:
Are fully licensed to practice independently in New York State
Have completed all required supervised hours and examination requirements
Bring years of post-graduate clinical experience across a range of presenting concerns
May hold additional certifications or specializations such as CASAC, CEAP, trauma certifications, or other advanced credentials
Provide individual, group, couples, and family therapy across a full scope of practice
Our licensed clinicians are the clinical backbone of Awaken Wellness. They lead the care of our clients, supervise our developing clinicians, and uphold the clinical and ethical standards our practice was built on.
A note on supervision and quality assurance
At Awaken Wellness, clinical supervision is not a formality — it is a cornerstone of how we operate. All intern and limited permit clinicians receive regular individual and group supervision from our fully licensed clinical staff. Cases are reviewed, documentation is monitored, and clinical decisions are made collaboratively.
This means that when you work with any member of our team, you have the full weight of our clinical infrastructure behind your care. One clinician in the room. An entire team in your corner.
How we built our team
At Awaken Wellness, we are intentional about who joins our clinical team. Our clinicians are not just skilled practitioners — they are people who have chosen this work because they believe in it deeply. They bring warmth, clinical rigor, lived experience, and a genuine investment in the wellbeing of every person who walks through our doors.
We are also proud to be a practice that trains the next generation of mental health professionals. From graduate interns to limited permit holders to fully licensed clinicians, our team reflects every stage of the clinical journey — and every stage is held to the same standard of care, compassion, and accountability. When you work with any member of the Awaken Wellness team, you are working with someone who is supported, supervised, and committed to your growth.
Why we built our team this way.
At Awaken Wellness, we believe that training the next generation of clinicians is not separate from our mission — it is part of it. A practice that invests in emerging professionals is a practice that stays current, stays accountable, and stays connected to why this work matters.
Every level of our team benefits from that structure. Our interns and permit holders bring energy, fresh training, and a deep desire to get it right. Our licensed clinicians bring experience, mentorship, and the steady hand of seasoned practice. And our clients benefit from a team that is always learning, always supervised, and always held to a high standard of care.
No matter who you work with at Awaken Wellness you are never working with someone who is alone in your care.
CONNECTGet matched with a clinician.
Choosing a clinician is one of the most personal decisions you can make. We want to make it easy. When you reach out to Awaken Wellness, our client navigator will take the time to understand what you are looking for — your presenting concerns, your preferences around clinician style and background, your scheduling needs, and your budget. From there, we will match you with the clinician who is best suited to support you. If at any point you feel the fit isn't right, we will work with you to find someone who is. Your comfort and your care come first, always.
