Valerie Toscano

MHC Intern

Valerie Toscano is a master’s student at Northwestern University pursuing a degree in Mental Health Counseling. Valerie works with adults, of all ages, who are navigating depression, anxiety, past and present-day trauma and everyday life stressors related to work, school, relationships and life in New York City.

Acknowledging that everyone is unique, Valerie employs an integrative approach that honors the connection across mental, physical and emotional well-being. She works in partnership with clients to identify focus areas and articulate the strategy and goals for counseling. Valerie pulls from principles of psychodynamic theory, CBT and ACT to turn one’s understanding of self into actionable steps for growth and greater fulfillment.

Valerie believes counseling fosters self-improvement and is the ultimate act of self-care. She seeks to create a welcoming, fun and relaxed environment where clients can be themselves and get the most out of their counseling experience. She has over 20 years of professional experience as a trusted problem solver and leader in the Financial Services industry. As the mother of a neurodivergent child, Valerie also has extensive experience navigating the complexities of NYC private schools, the college application process and raising children in New York City.

Valerie’s unique blend of life experience, professional experience and counseling skills give her clients the comfort level they need to build an authentic therapeutic connection. Outside the therapy room, she devotes time to family, friends, fitness, tennis, cooking and non-profit board work.
